Commodity and HS Codes

The Harmonised System (HS) and Harmonised Tariff Schedule (HTS) codes represent a standardized international system for classifying globally traded products. First implemented in 1988 and maintained by the World Customs Organization, this system has been adopted by over 205 member countries, ensuring a unified duty and tariff structure worldwide.

The system categorizes approximately 5,000 commodity groups into 21 sections and 96 chapters. By creating these unified categories, the system eases global trade, allowing customs authorities to accurately track imports and enforce safety regulations.

How are Commodity/HS Codes used?

These codes are essential for logistics providers and customs authorities to calculate duties and verify that imported goods comply with safety standards. Because they are globally recognized, the first four digits remain consistent regardless of the destination—for example, self-adhesive paper labels are generally classified under 4811 or 4821.

Economic Operators Registration & Identification Number (EORI)

Businesses and individuals trading within the EU must use an EORI number for all customs procedures. It provides one common identification number, streamlining information exchange between economic operators and customs authorities. The number consists of a country code followed by a unique sequence. Any economic operator established within the EU, or those outside looking to trade within, require this registration, which can be verified via the official EU or Gov.UK databases.
